The Port of Oslo has set high goals for our emissions. Every year, we reduce the amount of greenhouse gases we let out into the air around us - and this trend will only continue.

One container ship greatly reduces traffic on the roads 

A regular container ship sailing into the Oslo Fjord replaces around 400 semi-trailers on the main roads to Oslo. On these roads, the trailers might constitute a 10 km-long queue.

The graphic below illustrates the massive difference when travelling by sea rather than by land. The ship and the semi-trailers are shown to scale.

Transportation of containers by sea is 21 times better for the environment than travelling by road. If a truck was to carry a container weighing 21, 6 tons from Rotterdam to Oslo, the CO2 emissions would be 17 times higher than if it were transported by a ship. If the container arrives by sea rather than land, the environment has been saved from 3532 CO2-equivalents. This is the same amount of emissions as if you were to drive back and forth from Oslo to Trondheim 21 times by car. 

Still, there are no getting away from the fact that there are emissions from the port activities. That is why the Port of Oslo is working continuously to locate and reduce these emissions to their bare minimum. Measures such as replacing diesel cars and machines with the electrical equivalent does helps but the real difference lies with purchasing more greener ships with a more efficient fuel use. If the ships change to more environmental efficient fuel the air quality in Oslo will improve.

To better the air quality, onshore power supply is a popular measure. The Color Line's cruise ferries between Oslo and Kiel connects to onshore power every day when it docks at the port.  We are looking into the possibilities to offer Onshore Power Systems (OPS) for the remaining international ferries. Sadly, the necessary equipment to make onshore power possible to supply and receive is very expensive. Onshore power demands large investments from the port as well as the ship owner in order for it to work.

We have to realise that we will not reduce any air emissions with OPS unless we have customers that can use the facilities.

The Port of Oslo is also working to reduce the energy usage all along the waterfront. Energy saving measures have been made in many of the port’s buildings, and the outdoor lighting has been changed to energy efficient LED lighting.

There is a climate strategy that is at the centre in all the work at the port. It shows how we can reduce our climate emissions, how to improve air quality, how to reduce energy consumption, and increase our environmental efficiency in our waste management at the port. These are all important points to keep in mind when the Port of Oslo makes decisions that might effect our surroundings.
